Vietnam SIM Card & eSIM Guide for Travellers
Staying connected in Vietnam is cheap and easy — the only real choice is whether to buy a physical SIM or activate an eSIM before you arrive.
Vietnam has fast, affordable mobile data and strong 4G in cities and most tourist areas. You have two practical options: a physical SIM bought on arrival, or an eSIM activated before you land.
eSIM vs physical SIM
| eSIM | Physical SIM | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Activate before arrival via app/QR | Buy and insert on the ground |
| Phone needed | eSIM-compatible handset | Any unlocked phone |
| Keep home number | Yes (dual SIM) | Usually no |
| Best for | Convenience, instant connection | Lowest price, local number |
An eSIM is the easiest option if your phone supports it — you’re online the moment you land. A physical SIM is often cheaper and gives you a local number, handy for booking Grab or restaurant calls.
The main carriers
- Viettel — the largest network with the best coverage, including rural and remote areas. The safest choice if you’ll travel beyond the big cities.
- Vinaphone — strong nationwide coverage, a solid alternative.
- Mobifone — good in cities and popular destinations.
For a trip that stays in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, or Da Nang, any of the three works well. For mountains, islands, or back-roads travel, lean toward Viettel.
Buying at the airport vs in town
You can buy a SIM at official carrier counters in the arrivals area of major airports — quick and convenient, though prices tend to be a little higher. In town, look for official carrier stores rather than random kiosks, which sometimes overcharge or sell poorly configured SIMs.
Bring your passport — Vietnam requires SIMs to be registered to a traveller’s ID, and reputable sellers will scan it during activation.
Indicative data pricing
Prices are indicative and change often — confirm at the point of sale:
- Tourist data SIM (several weeks, generous data): roughly 150,000–300,000 VND (about US$6–12).
- Top-up data packages: from around 50,000 VND upward depending on the allowance.
- eSIM travel packages via apps: typically US$5–20 depending on data and validity.
eSIM via travel apps
Several international travel eSIM apps sell Vietnam data plans you can buy and install before departure — scan a QR code, choose a plan, and you’re connected on arrival. This avoids queues and passport registration, though per-GB cost can be higher than a local SIM.
Tip: keep your hotel offline-ready
Download offline maps and your booking confirmations before you go, so a brief gap in coverage never strands you.
