Ha Long Bay Travel Guide: Cruises, Caves & Karst Islands
Thousands of limestone towers rise from emerald water in Vietnam's most iconic UNESCO seascape.
Ha Long Bay, in Quang Ninh province, is Vietnam’s defining natural wonder: a sprawling UNESCO World Heritage seascape where some 1,600 limestone karst islands and islets erupt from the turquoise water of the Gulf of Tonkin. Drifting among them by cruise boat is one of Southeast Asia’s great travel experiences.
Why Visit Ha Long Bay
The bay’s beauty is its sheer scale and strangeness. Forested pinnacles, hidden lagoons, floating fishing communities, and vast cave systems make every bend of the route a new scene. Mornings often start in soft mist before the sun burns through to reveal the full sweep of the karsts.
What to See and Do
- Overnight cruise – the best way to experience the bay, with sunset and sunrise on the water.
- Sung Sot Cave – the “Cave of Surprises,” a cathedral-like grotto inside Bo Hon Island.
- Ti Top Island – climb the viewpoint for the classic panorama, then swim from its beach.
- Kayaking – paddle through arches and into quiet lagoons.
- Lan Ha Bay & Cat Ba – quieter neighbouring waters with beaches and fewer crowds.

Getting There
The gateway is Hanoi, around 2.5 to 3 hours away by road via the modern expressway to the cruise harbours near Ha Long city and Hai Phong. Most visitors book a cruise package that includes transfers, but private cars and shuttle buses are easy to arrange. Pairing Ha Long Bay With Your Trip
A bay cruise is the perfect leisure bookend to a Vietnam dental trip. Because Ha Long is so close to the capital, many travellers cruise for a night or two and then return to a clinic in Hanoi for affordable, high-quality treatment.
