Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) Travel Guide
Vietnam's biggest, fastest, most electric city — French-colonial boulevards, war history, street food, and the country's leading hub for advanced healthcare.
Ho Chi Minh City — still widely called Saigon — is Vietnam’s commercial heart: nine million people, motorbikes by the river, rooftop bars above colonial landmarks, and some of the best eating in Southeast Asia. It’s also the country’s primary destination for international-standard medical and dental care.
Top things to do
- War Remnants Museum — sobering, essential context for the American War.
- Independence (Reunification) Palace — frozen in 1975.
- Notre-Dame Cathedral & Central Post Office — the colonial core of District 1.
- Ben Thanh Market — the classic introduction to Saigon’s food and chaos.
- Bui Vien & Nguyen Hue walking streets — nightlife and people-watching.
- Rooftop bars — sunset over the skyline from Bitexco or the Landmark 81 area.
Day trips
- Cu Chi Tunnels — the Viet Cong tunnel network, ~1.5 hrs northwest.
- Mekong Delta (My Tho / Ben Tre) — rivers, coconut candy, floating life, ~2 hrs south.
Where to stay
District 1 is the obvious base — walkable to the major sights, hotels at every budget, and closest to the main dental and medical clinics. District 3 is quieter and more local; Thao Dien (District 2) is the leafy expat area.
Best time to visit
The south has two seasons. Dry season (December–April) is the prime window — warm, low rain. The wet season (May–November) brings short, heavy afternoon downpours but fewer crowds. See the full best time to visit Vietnam guide.
Getting there & around
Fly into Tan Son Nhat International (SGN), ~7 km from the centre. Use the Grab app for cheap, metered car and motorbike rides. The city’s first metro line opened along the Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien corridor.
Combine your trip with dental care
Saigon is Vietnam’s top dental tourism hub — internationally trained dentists, modern clinics clustered in District 1, and savings of 50–70% versus Western prices. A treatment fits neatly around a few days of sightseeing or a Mekong trip. Full details: dental tourism in Ho Chi Minh City.
