Hue Travel Guide: Imperial Citadel, Royal Tombs & Cuisine

Vietnam's former imperial capital guards a walled citadel, riverside royal tombs, and one of the country's great food cultures.

Hue was the seat of the Nguyen dynasty, Vietnam’s last imperial line, and that royal legacy still defines the city. Straddling the Perfume River in central Vietnam, it offers a walled citadel, a constellation of elaborate emperors’ tombs, and a refined cuisine born in the royal kitchens.

Why Visit Hue

Hue is the place to feel Vietnam’s imperial past. The monuments are grand yet weathered, set against gardens, pine-shaded hills, and the slow Perfume River. It is more contemplative than Vietnam’s big cities, and its food scene rivals any in the country.

What to See and Do

  • Imperial Citadel – the vast UNESCO-listed walled complex enclosing the Forbidden Purple City.
  • Royal tombs – the ornate resting places of emperors Tu Duc, Khai Dinh, and Minh Mang.
  • Thien Mu Pagoda – an iconic seven-storey tower above the Perfume River.
  • Perfume River cruise – a dragon-boat trip linking riverside sights.
  • Bun bo Hue – the city’s famous spicy beef-and-lemongrass noodle soup.

When to Go

The drier, more comfortable months run roughly February to August. The later autumn and winter period brings central Vietnam’s heaviest rains, so plan sightseeing accordingly if you visit then.

Getting There

Hue pairs naturally with the coast. It is about a 2-hour drive from Da Nang, and the route over the Hai Van Pass is one of Vietnam’s most scenic coastal roads. Many travellers combine Hue with nearby Hoi An for a central-Vietnam loop of imperial history and old-town charm.

Pairing Hue With Your Trip

Hue is a leisure and culture highlight rather than a dental hub, so it works best as part of a central-Vietnam itinerary. Base your practical plans around Da Nang, explore Hue’s tombs and citadel, then arrange dental care at a major hub such as Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.
