3 Days in Hanoi: The Perfect Long-Weekend Itinerary
Three days covers the Old Quarter, Hanoi's landmarks and food, plus a day trip to Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh — with a base that's ideal for adding dental work.
Three days in Hanoi is enough to soak up the Old Quarter’s chaos and charm, see the city’s defining landmarks, and escape for a day to the karst landscapes nearby. A steady three-night base also makes this an easy trip to combine with a dental visit.
At a glance
| Day | Focus | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Old Quarter | Hoan Kiem Lake, street food, egg coffee |
| 2 | City landmarks | Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum |
| 3 | Day trip | Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh |
Day-by-day
Day 1 — The Old Quarter. Wander the tangle of trade streets, circle Hoan Kiem Lake and cross to Ngoc Son Temple, and graze your way through bun cha, pho, and the city’s famous egg coffee. Catch a water-puppet show in the evening and end with a Bia Hoi on Ta Hien street.
Day 2 — City landmarks. See the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and One Pillar Pagoda in the morning, then the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university. In the afternoon, visit the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long or the Vietnamese Women’s Museum, and stroll the French Quarter around the Opera House.
Day 3 — Day trip. Choose your escape. Ha Long Bay offers a full-day cruise among the limestone karsts (long but spectacular), while Ninh Binh — the “Ha Long Bay on land” — is a closer two-hour trip for a Trang An sampan ride and the Mua Cave viewpoint.
Practical tips
- Stay in or near the Old Quarter to walk to most sights.
- Book the day trip a day ahead — both Ha Long and Ninh Binh are widely offered as guided tours.
- Use Grab for cars and bikes; see getting around Vietnam.
- Sort your e-visa before you fly, and check best time to visit — the north can be cool in winter.
Add a dental treatment to the trip
A three-day, single-base trip is one of the simplest ways to pair sightseeing with dental care. Hanoi is one of Vietnam’s two main dental hubs, and many treatments — crowns, veneers, a check-up and clean, or the first stage of implants — fit neatly into a long weekend. Book chair time in the morning and keep your afternoons free for the city.
