7 Days in Vietnam: A Focused One-Week Itinerary
One week is tight for a country this long — so pick a north OR central focus, fly between regions, and travel deep rather than wide.
Seven days in Vietnam is enough for a memorable trip — but only if you resist the urge to do everything. Vietnam stretches more than 1,600 km north to south, so the smart move is to pick one focus and fly between regions instead of losing days to overland travel.
At a glance
| Days | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Hanoi | Old Quarter, street food, egg coffee, Hoan Kiem Lake |
| 3–4 | Ha Long Bay | Overnight cruise among the limestone karsts |
| 5–7 | Hoi An / Da Nang | Ancient Town, tailors, beaches, Golden Bridge |
Choose your focus
For a first visit in a week, the north-plus-central route above is the most rewarding. If you’d rather go deeper in one area, two strong alternatives are:
- Pure north — base in Hanoi, then add Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, and an overnight to Sapa.
- Central heritage — fly straight into Da Nang, settle in Hoi An, and day-trip to Hue and Ba Na Hills.
Trying to add Ho Chi Minh City in the same week usually means too much time at airports. Save the deep south for a longer trip.
Day-by-day
Days 1–2 — Hanoi. Settle into the Old Quarter, walk Hoan Kiem Lake, visit the Temple of Literature, and eat your way through bun cha, pho, and egg coffee.
Days 3–4 — Ha Long Bay. Take an overnight cruise with a reputable operator. Kayak, swim, and catch sunrise over the karsts, then return to Hanoi and fly to Da Nang.
Days 5–7 — Hoi An & Da Nang. Base in Hoi An for the lantern-lit Ancient Town and a same-day tailor fitting; cycle to An Bang Beach; day-trip to the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills before you fly home from Da Nang.
Practical tips
- Book the internal flight early — Hanoi→Da Nang is short and inexpensive.
- Pack for two climates — the north can be cool while central Vietnam is warm. See best time to visit.
- Sort your e-visa before you fly (up to 90 days, all nationalities).
- Use Grab for transport in every city, and read getting around Vietnam.
Add a dental treatment to the trip
If your week includes a Hanoi base, it’s easy to fold in a dental visit. Hanoi is one of Vietnam’s two main dental hubs, and treatments like crowns, veneers, or a check-up and cleaning slot neatly into a multi-night city stay. A focused single-region trip actually makes scheduling chair time simpler, since you aren’t moving cities every day.
