Northern Vietnam Itinerary: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh & Sapa
Use Hanoi as your base and fan out to the karst seascapes of Ha Long Bay, the river valleys of Ninh Binh, and the terraced mountains of Sapa.
Northern Vietnam packs the country’s most dramatic landscapes into a compact region. With Hanoi as your hub, you can reach a UNESCO seascape, a river-valley national park, and the high rice terraces of the northwest — all within a few hours’ travel. Allow seven to ten days to do it without rushing.

Day-by-day
Days 1–3 — Hanoi. Base yourself in the Old Quarter. Walk Hoan Kiem Lake, see the Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and eat bun cha, pho, and egg coffee. Hanoi is also your launchpad for every trip below.
Days 3–4 — Ha Long Bay. Join an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise with a reputable operator. Kayak through hidden lagoons, swim, and watch sunrise over the karsts before returning to Hanoi.
Days 5–6 — Ninh Binh. Two hours south, Ninh Binh is the “Ha Long Bay on land.” Take a sampan through the Trang An caves and climb the 500 steps at Mua Cave for the classic valley view. An overnight here is worthwhile.
Days 7–9 — Sapa. Travel northwest to Sapa by overnight train or sleeper bus. Trek between terraced rice fields, visit Hmong and Dao villages, and — if the weather is clear — take the cable car toward Fansipan, Indochina’s highest peak.
Practical tips
- Hanoi is the natural base — most tours, trains, and buses begin and end here.
- Go for the train to Sapa if you’d rather not lose a day to the road.
- Best months are roughly Sep–Nov and Mar–May. See best time to visit — Sapa is cool year-round and cold in winter.
- Sort your e-visa in advance, and read getting around Vietnam.
Add a dental treatment to the trip
Because this itinerary keeps returning to Hanoi between excursions, it’s a natural fit for dental work. Hanoi is one of Vietnam’s two main dental hubs, so you can book chair time on your city days — crowns, veneers, or a cleaning — and head out to the mountains while you wait between appointments.
